Chapter Twelve
Noah and Solly lunched at Livres et Café on Saturday, securing a table inside as the sun had been baking them both all morning while they performed their duties at the park. The opportunity for air-conditioned comfort was to be relished.
Kat greeted them cheerily, racing past with a tray full of cold drinks and pastries to deliver to an outside table. Sheâd twisted her hair up in some complicated fashion today with a clasp that looked like a big purple butterfly securing it to the back of her head, though occasional curls escaped to float about her face. With her eyes bright with purpose and lips curving into her ready smile, just the sight of her made Noahâs heart beat faster.
One of the assistants, Antoine, came to the table to take their order. Solly ordered one of the crusty ham and cheese rolls he liked and a chocolate cake. He certainly loved his sugar. Noah chose a sandwich and the largest cup of coffee available. He needed caffeine after helping tourists in and out of kayaks all morning. As those on the ârescueâ paddle boards had been seconded elsewhere today, Noah had had to jump into a kayak and swish off into the lake twice to give people a tow back or recapture a lost paddle. Hapless tourists tended to think such mishaps hilarious, but it was a pain in the arse to Noah, even if it entertained the queue of visitors waiting for empty vessels.
Sollyâs phone rang and with an explanatory, âItâs Ola,â he took the call, his end of the discussion comprising: âI donât know yet. Iâve got to talk to my sister. Yes, Iâm waiting to talk to her now, but sheâs busy working. Yes, Iâll text you and let you know.â
While Solly carried on negotiating with Ola, Noah watched Kat carrying and hurrying or stretching up for a book on a high shelf. It was no wonder her body underneath those clothes was so firm. She smiled at the elderly gent sheâd retrieved the book for and he looked as if heâd been hit by a truck.
Noah knew how he felt. When was he going to be able to spend time with her again? A phone conversation late last night had only fed his appetite for her, even if much of the conversation had been taken up with the news of Florine and Clémence attending the book club and Kat having told Florine about free wristbands for children of the staff, something he should have remembered to say himself. Kat was a star to have thought to bring the subject up and he hoped Florine would follow up that lead and bring Clémence to Parc Lemmel while Yohan was busy at work.
Heâd decided to offer to take Angelique for a run when heâd eaten, though it was small reparation for what Kat had done for him.
Heâd deliberately ordered his lunch first today, so Kat didnât feel constrained to feed him on the house in return, which was how things had worked out on previous occasions.
